Kathleen Godfrey 1911-2003

Paula and I attended my gran’s funeral yesterday. A sombre affair but a good turn out and some hearty singing followed by some hearty reminiscing and drinking back at Barnfield. Dad even let me have some of his very special malt whisky. A reflective thought of mine during the day was that Gran had lived through an amazing time in human development. She was born on a farm during the height of the industrial revolution and lived to see the beginnings of the current technological evolution. She had a great life and will be missed by us all.

Another thought struck me today. Where were the Shaws from? Staffordshire obviously but the name Kathleen can be spelt several ways:
Cathlin
Katelin
Kathleen
Cathlyn

My guess is that its a Celtic name - possibly in this day and age from Irish roots - the Irish having come to England in droves during the famine, and thats what I woudl expect around Staffordshire. But the 'lyn' version suggest a potential Welsh varient - and North Wales is a stones throw from Staffs. Intersting. Especially as the Pittock side of my family - from East Kent is so obviously Sccandinavian in origin.
