mobi domains - what's the point

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN to you and me) approved the new domain of .mobi in Luxembourg yesterday.

The idea is that web sites will be built for small screen devices such as mobile phones and using the .mobi domain will identify them as built especially for mobile phones.

Great, but hang on a moment - if you use Web Standards you can already do this on an ordinary well constructed web site. All this new domain does is encourage a new raft of spending on domain names by corporates eager to protect their brands and identities. Money for old rope.

Other new domains approved by ICANN yesterday that you can spend your hard earned shareholders profit on to protect your brand include .eu, .jobs, .travel and .xxx for the porn industry.
