Kenley Airport

Yesterday we went up to Kenley Airport as there was an air event going on. There were plenty of static exhibits including several old aircraft - the Civilian Aircraft Company Coupe being the most interesting. This later took off and with the other planes did a fly by.

The twin 19 year old Dover girls gave us a great display on their Utterly Butterly biplanes.

It must have been cold up there!

The highlight of the event was meant to be a flypast of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, consisting of the Lancaster bomber, Dakota transport, five Spitfire fighters and two Hurricane fighters, of which the Lancaster, a hurricane and a Spitfire were due to fly past Kenley at 15:30. However they had been in an air show in Cardiff earlier in the day and the weather had turned bad and they were grounded. As the commentator told us the bad news it started to rain and we headed for home partly disappointed but it had been a fun event and we hope it becomes an annual event - if the airfield survives.

Currently a building company is trying to get planning permission to build a massive housing complex on the site and so deprive local people of recreational facilities and they will destroy an airfield that was significant in keeping Britain out of Nazi hands in WW2.
