Big brother racism

I have to state that I am not a big fan of Channel 4's Big Brother and am I keen on Paula not watching it as well because after a few days her eyes start to sort of glaze a bit. However Big Brother has really got itself on the news this time and its pervading every newspaper, radio broadcast, even BBC Radio 4 for goodness sake, and conversation in Britain at the moment.

And what’s the fuss - racism. Three of the girls have been 'ganging' up on one of the others - basically they don't get on. In any Lord of the Flies / playground situation this would happen. The fact that the girl on her own is Indian and the playground is televised makes it national news. I hate racism I really do but I do believe that Channel 4 have allowed this to explode out of all proportion because it boosts public interest in the program. From what little I have read so far I see three ignorant little girls just having a bitch - not vicious racist hatred. What seems to be at fault is thier social upbringing - and that's always a contentious issue anyway - who's social upbringing was perfect in hindsite?

Allegedly one boy in the house used a racially offensive word (and it was totally inaccurate) - Channel 4 say otherwise. This programme may have set back race relations in this country 10 years - not because of what is on the programme itself - I don't think its that big a deal but because the way its spun out of control in the media. Channel 4 should be ashamed of themselves.

I still won't be watching but I bet more people will be.

Update!

Thoughts on Big Brothers handling of the racism issues.
