Clagnut has put together a great tutorial on how to give a photo a flash like fade feel when opening and its just a simple little peice of javascript. It uses getElementById - which I thnk we are only just starting to discover the posibilites of. The technique doesn't have to be used for fading in images - it could be used for any effect on your site.
