I had recently been getting some odd comments to this site and it's not just me, [Ben](https://web.archive.org/web/20091126172834/http://www.benhammersley.com/weblog/2004/11/09/new_comment_spam.html) and [Dave](https://web.archive.org/web/20091126172834/http://blog.dave.org.uk/archives/000487.html) have as well. I checked out the domains and there are no websites sites and no clues from the registrations - other than no clues means possible spammer.

Initially I thought it might be a way to try and circumvent the latest MT-Blacklist v2.01b where you can allow posts to go live without approval:  
**"Last approved comment" bypass:** X **days** where X = the number of days you want to allow.  

> Old entry moderation can hinder long running conversations in an older entry and be a downright pain if the comments on an old entry catch fire. Using this setting, you can have MT-Blacklist omit an old entry from forced moderation if its last approved comment is within the duration specified above. Set to 0 to disable this feature.

If they were to get a post approved then the commenting would be open for spamming for the next X amount of time. But why use a real domain unless you want that link in place.

However I think the idea about setting up a domain and proliferating quality links to it early in its life before its actually launched is a stronger one. Google '[sandbox's](https://web.archive.org/web/20091126172834/http://www.webpronews.com/ebusiness/sitepromotion/wpn-3-20040826WhatisTheGoogleSandboxEffect.html)' new sites and the spammers may be trying to get round this for their sites. 

I am sure they only see comments on blogs as a usefull tool but either way they will not find any joy from this site but it will be intersting to see what they are trying to do. Meantime I will be tightening up my comment approvals even more.
